Not really, the MCG could host the NRL Grand Final after a sensational bid by the Victorian government to take the game away from the lands of Sydney by putting a huge amount of investment that approaches the amount of $700 million plan to convert the ANZ Stadium into a rectangular venue. This renovation plan will start in 2019 and end in 2022. The 2017 NRL Grand Final hopes are keeping around 3 million Aussies watching and anticipating after a 26 week season play and only two teams left for the Grand Final. There will be a lot of talks and speculations but looking at the past odds and results show that surprises do happen very often.
A probable turn in events?
With only nothing but time to wait, 83 million odd tickets holders are waiting to see how the game turns out for them, as they plan to go Sydney’s ANZ stadium to see who will take the legendary trophy home. Taking a good luck at the past years shows some dramatic turn of events as teams won the trophy and wrote their names in gold in history books, supporting various industries that endorse them and getting glory and pride to their teams and fans. In 2014, the Rabbitohs took the trophy home after 43 years of going without one, while in 2008 we saw Manly with the biggest winning ever, knocking off the Storm 40-0. But that's what we love about the great game of rugby league - the NRL. The game can change in a heartbeat.
John Eren, the Victorian Sports minister claims that if there is to be a successful event like last year’s with more than 90,000 attendees then he would choose to have it in Melbourne, claiming that although Sydney is the sporting capital of NSW, Melbourne is probably the sporting of the whole world, ensuring that any event would be greatly successful. Traditionally the NRL grand final is usually played on the Sunday night right before labor day, which is usually the first Monday in October, and Eren thinks that the event should be moved to Melbourne to have more success. Although some people claim that Melbourne will not be up to the challenge of hosting more than 107,000 like Sydney did in 1999.
A timing obstacle:
On the other hand, hosting this event could be faced by timing and logistics obstacle. The NRL grand final and the Australian football league will host playoffs on the same weekend, which could be a little bit of a problem. But the MCC chief sees otherwise, he claims that they successfully hosted big and important events like State of Origin, Bledisloe Cup, International soccer and World Cup qualifiers so if they can host such big and international events, having the NRL grand final and the AFL finals on the same weekend is something that can be done.
Time will tell:
Just like we expect things to turn in a blink of an eye for the 2017 NRL Grand Final Odds, we think that there may be a change in what is planned. It is quite understandable that the government didn’t actually consult the AFL before they made their announcement although their decisions could greatly impact the AFL affairs. There will still be some talks to conclude the matter as many NRL fans keep on waiting for the final decision.
